I like learning new things. I’m endlessly curious. This fall, I dove into the deep end of local politics and political campaigning. Such a major learning curve! I’ll write about this roller coaster experience in the future. In the meantime, I have to ask my reader for some patience for the spotty writing output, as I have almost no time to write until November 8th.
Like the rest of the country, I have been transfixed by events in Israel by Hamas and the ongoing conflict. I’m a domestic policy writer and scholar, so I think I will stay in my lane and point you to excellent substack writers with more expertise on this topic. But I will say that I will probably never be able to unsee those videos of the butchery of young people at a music festival.

Home Projects: Despite my crazy work schedule, I decided that this was absolutely the best time to redo my closet. Here are some pictures. I’ll make a video of this project whenever I get a few free minutes.
Campaigning: I made my first campaign video using some iPhone apps and started a campaign newsletter, but I think I’m done with tech/social media tools. From now on, it’s going to be old fashioned door-knocking and speeches at local functions.
Shopping: Yes, my sweaters are garbage, and I’m okay with that. Mostly. I bought three cheap Amazon sweaters this week. I love them. I’ll wear them until they fall apart, which should happen in about 12 months. And then I’ll give my husband the link to a really good sweater, so he can get my Christmas gift.

Where did that $100 billion in covid education money go? Jill Barshay reports: that money didn’t go to kids, but toward hiring more teachers. Even though the student population has dropped. And now that the covid money is drying up, a lot of those teachers are going to get fired.
Shopping: With all the campaign functions, I needed update my jacket collection. It’s all about loose, long 80’s style blazers. I went cheap for these trendy pieces. Zara’s Blazer with Rolled-Up Sleeves. and two jackets from H & M.
Food: New York Time’s Sheetpan Chicken with Lemon. I doubled the recipe and used cauliflower instead of Brussel sprouts.
Pictures: Hi, I’m Laura, and I go to school board meetings.
ICYMI Writing: I wrote about my son’s epilepsy last week. And the week before I wrote about what teachers are saying about student performance and behavior.
