Completely understand your POV (It's Better Diagnoses, Not Vaccines) but your POV is still anecdotal. It is not a substitute for scientific data that should look at every aspect of the rise in ,and cause of autism (very expensive and hard to do, I know). I have seen data saying it's
a) 80% genetic,
b) it's improved diagnosis,
c) it's environmental (I include vaccines and their timing in this category) and
d) it's "inter terrestrial aliens".
But we just don't know (although I'm pretty sure it's NOT aliens). What we DO know is early intervention is crucial for improved outcome. Fully support improving diagnosis funding for ALL.
Certainly better diagnosis is a contributor for the increase, could even be the dominating contributor. But I welcome RFKs announcement to look into every aspect, if he can follow through.
Thank you for the link to source information. I will spend some time this week reading and absorbing. If you have other source documents I would appreciate links. Assortive mating is a topic I find fascinating so if you find any sources for that please share!
Agree that "lighter" versions are increasingly being identified, and my own "anecdotal" experience is that lighter versions are profitable for some, and advantageous for students (and their parents). My kids are past this and dealing with their lives well (lucky me). But I am trying to read as much as I can and learn. Thanks for your efforts.
Autism is genetic, probably with an environmental trigger. Genetics are a constant, except if we consider assortive mating.
The question isn't what causes autism. The question is, why are the numbers going up? That has a different answer. The kind of autism that is increasingly being identified is the lighter versions, which had different labels or was completely missed in the past.

Excellent article. Thanks.
Nice work, Laura. Helpful and reassuring.
